Getting that Plate Number you wanted at Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ)
One Timer February 12th, 2007When I bought my first own car last time, I was so thrilled until I even purchased a specific Plate Number from JPJ.
At first, I thought that it’d be difficult to buy a number on my own without using the runner provided by the car sales agent. When asked, the agent told me that to buy a number would cost around RM400-RM500. Some other independent runners even quote me a lot more expensive.
I was little bit surprised when I got the estimation. Then I started to think, can it be that expensive and intricate if I had to buy the number myself. As a result, I did go to JPJ and gotten my favorite Plate Number in less than 30 minutes for only RM310.
In this post, I will illustrate the steps that I’ve taken to buy my car Plate Number at JPJ Wilayah Persekutuan office.
Getting ready
First thing I did was to browse to JPJ Wilayah’s website and click on the ‘No Kenderaan Terkini’. I need to know the latest running Plate Number so that I be able to decide the number I wanted appropriately.
Before I head on to JPJ, I make sure that I had bring the booking receipt received after placing an order to my new car. Apart than that, I also ensured that I have the list of other numbers if just incase the number I wanted already been taken.
Get it done
I arrived JPJ area at Wangsa Maju exactly 7.30AM and office hours only starts at 7.45AM. It’d be good idea to go there early as the queue to buy number isn’t that long yet. If I was late, let say, reached at 10 AM, the queue would be horrific.
I immediately enter a main hall which has counters for people to renew their road tax or perform vehicle name transfer. I gave a quick scan and found a counter that wasn’t that busy and ask the person behind it of how to buy Plate Number.
He then told me to take the ‘Borang’ first. He guided me to a counter that was located just outside of the main hall. I queued there for not more than 5 minutes, obtained the form and filled it in. Next, he told me to go to the rear of the main hall and will spot two counters with TV displaying current running Plate Number.
Once reached there, I immediately stand into queue to buy my fav number. While standing in the line, I noticed the screen was showing running number from 2000-4000. This means, my sought after number: 7222, wasn’t listed in the running number.
My turn to pick the number had come. I showed a piece of paper that has the numbers I wanted to the lady sitting behind the counter. She entered the first number to the system and responded to me by saying that the number is available. However, she told me that it isn’t in the running number. A running number would cost me RM210 and non-listed number need to add another RM100.
Without hesitation, I agreed to pay RM310 for that number. She took my I/C and started to key in to the system. Shortly, she printed a paper and gave it to me. That piece of paper, she said, must be enclosed together with other documents when registering for the new car Road Tax. In other word, just give it to my car sales agent.
A happy chap
That was it. The time showed 10 minutes after 8 o’clock in the morning and I have completed my purchasing. Still wasn’t that late, I rushed to Damansara to punch in for work.
To summarize it, buying a car plate number you need to;
- Check out JPJ website.
- Bring booking receipt and I/C.
- Get to JPJ early.
- Prepare list of numbers.
- Be ready to pay up to RM310.
- Give the proof of purchase to car sales agent.
- Enjoy the new ride.
I learned it.
p/s This is how much people willing to pay for a number — RM200,000. Read it here.

Dude, thanks for the guide, really useful and not as tough as many imagined it to be.
July 27th, 2007 at 6:28 pm
Glad that I can help. I just bought another number 2 weeks ago for my wife’s car. Nowadays, the price has gone from RM310 to RM350 for non-running numbers.
The steps are also getting easier and lesser. Just bring I/C fill in the form and that’s it. Previously they need the booking receipt, but it’s not the case anymore.
Also, I’ve found out how to buy those even cooler but extremely expensive number such as Single-Digit or Two-Digit numbers. I’ll try to create a post on that as well somewhere in the future.
July 31st, 2007 at 5:28 pm
cool info bro. thanks.
questions - what happens if the number you wanted say 7222 already in the tender by someone else? would the officer tell you? and you need to decide if you want to match/top the other bidder?
awaiting your new post on those single & two digit numbers.
cheers

you have 2 way to get the single or double digit number.
1. you tender urself
2. thru JPJ runner to buy the number from them
I work in car dealeer, pls msg me if anything i can help
May 7th, 2008 at 11:38 am
I’ve been guiding two of my friends to get the two-digit numbers and they failed to win the bid.
So my assumption is that, using runner might secure the number as they could have some-what an extra step to confirm the bid.
Hence, I will not guide you guys on how to tender yourself for the single or two digit numbers. It might wouldn’t work. Plus the anxiety is too emotionally profound.
June 11th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Can I bring cash or do I need a bank draft? This SA told me I have to bring a bank draft.
Anyway, I thought this is a tender, how come can just buy it directly and there is no tender involved? If I am not mistaken tender system means who pays more gets it, or vice versa.
June 11th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Thanks. I am leaving right for the JPJ now to try it out. Wish me luck.
June 13th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Just won my first tender.
Visit your local JPJ office.
There is always a printed list of successful tender i.e. a list of numbers, name of people who were successful, as well as the amount which won the tender.
See the list to get a rough idea on how much you should tender for your particular favourite number.
This list is renewed every 3 - 4 weeks for Wilayah numbers which go very quickly for a particular alphabet.
This is the best way if you are not in a hurry as if you were to go get the number yourself on a particular day, your number may no longer be available as it was tendered by somebody else 3 - 4 weeks ago.
All numbers that are released are numbers which have not been tendered i.e. less popular numbers.
Remember one very important thing - the highest tender might not be the eventual winner - other factors are involved, including your profession and your name.
August 1st, 2008 at 11:21 am
some tips for you guys.
JPJ will give priority to those who have entered the bidding for the numbers before the closing date of the tender. therefore, if u want to get running no. or non-running number, some of the numbers that have been booked earlier thru the bidding process wont be made available to you.
For Wilayah plate, each series i.e. WRX or WRY will only be tendered for 2 weeks. So every 2 weeks, the result of succesful bidding will be published on the notice board at JPJ Wilayah in Wangsa Maju.
Pricing? It’s based on highest bid, altho JPJ does give a disclaimer on the application form that they have the prerogative to decide upon whatever basis they wish to.
Normally, the single digit is gotten at between RM20 to 80k with the exception to no. 4 which normally priced around 7k.
Double digit is cheaper but if the no. is below 30, it is pricier. I can be between 1.5k to 2.2k..
Hope this info give u guys some insight.
But pls do it urself. Dont use the agent.

January 12th, 2009 at 10:51 am

@Best: Glad that it has helped you.

can we buy non-KL plate at JPJ wangsa maju?
let say i want to buy car at KL, and I want
to register Terengganu plate on my car, can
I go to JPJ wangsa maju to buy it? tq
February 20th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
@Azleen: As far as I know, it does not work like that. You may need to visit the state respectively in order to get that particular number.
I had a friend whom bought a car in Seremban because the queue was shorter and had the Sales Agent travel down to Wangsa Maju in order to get the Wilayah number for him.
All the best and hope you’ll get what you are looking for.

how to tender two digit number with cheap betting
April 6th, 2009 at 10:15 am
fendy,
i have a question, dunno u can help or not. me and my wife are getting a car, which we already granted the loan last week. the story is, the loan/car shall be reg. under my wife’s name as our previous car is reg. under her’s -hence we want to make use of the NCD.
my question is, who shall have to go to JPJ? me or my wife? can i just go on her behalf?
TQ
June 17th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Fendy,
i’m like the others, lookin for nice number for my car. My new car will be received by next month, July 2009 and the current running wilayah plate number is WSS. Soon or later, it will change to WST which is not my favourite. I like to have WSS or WSU or WSV. WSU has already close the tender and WSV is now open for tender. Let say i get the number which i tendered for WSV but the running number still either WST or WSU, it is possible for me to register WSV even the said serie has not yet come. Please advise.
July 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
@xvr: If you are going on your wife behalf, the best thing to do is to call JPJ and ask them if this is possible, and what are the procedures needed to be followed. Personally, I think it should be OK. After all, this concept is same like how you would use an agent to complete your JPJ routine tasks.
@Ahmad: By all mean, I’m no JPJ expert. But to get WSV, you gotta wait for it to be opened for tendering. Normally the tendering open two or three letters after the current letter running number.
To get better answer, call the JPJ hotline which available at their website. Tell the Customer Service about your deal. Most of the time, they will help out and will guide you the next course of action.
All the best!
July 9th, 2009 at 7:01 am
Fendi,
Thanks for the advise. Called JPJ and given to understand that the tender result will be disclosed upon the particular serie is almost out already. Meaning that, for WSV result, will come out when WSU is almost over already. I,m getting no. 3399 but not under WSV serie.
July 16th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

saya nak tahu dapat tender no plat kereta no wsw9819?
August 5th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
hi fendy, i would like to ask.
i have booked a car n will get on the 8th aug.
i have tendered a plate number which is WSY.
but since i can get the car sooner, i can take the plate of WSX 8… wic is now available yet.now its only WSW 8..and the number that i want is no more available for WSW so i hope i can get WSX with the same number..the number that i want is not in tender.. my question, would i be able to get the number even though now the queue is only at WSW 6..??
August 7th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
@Mike, sorry mate I don’t quite have any way nor know anyone that has the experience to do that. But if you somehow managed to find a way, hopefully can share with everyone here. That would certainly be interesting.
@nurul, you gotta wait until the WSW finishes its due and the new WSX to kick in. As far as I know, there’s no other possible way to get unopened alphabet except tender by form submission.
Two months ago, I was at JPJ buying number for my latest ride. I came early in the morning, but at that time the running number was 9000-9999. I had to wait like everyone else in the room for the current alphabet to expire and start the new one. I still remember, once the alphabet was up, people gushing desperately to the counter to get the queue ticket. It was totally different intense experience.
August 7th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
tq fendy..i got the clear picture already..:)
August 23rd, 2009 at 4:25 pm
i see some number didn’t publish on the winning list, i think no ppl bid on it…such as 2222 , 3333 , 4444…with a minimun RM800. My question is can i buy directly from JPJ if the number not being bid???
August 31st, 2009 at 5:08 pm

October 1st, 2009 at 11:26 pm
Hi Fendy,
I found you Blog whilst doing a ‘Google’ search as i wanted to find the location of JPJ to meet my ‘runner’ there today.
However after reading your Blog, I thought I would try and do it myself, and even though this ‘Blog posting’ is almost 3 years old, the procedure is exactly the same today. I arrived at JPJ at 7.55am. Got the Borang, and a lovely lady helped me understand what to fill in, (I am from Ireland), and I left the building 15 minutes later with my selected number.(Unfortunately not my favourite, as I should have been there yesterday to stand a chance of getting that one). If I had read your blog a day earlier I may have been lucky as that number had not been subjected to ‘tender’!
I have a question for anyone who can answer:- To stand a better chance of getting your specific favourite number, it is best to ‘tender’. If you have several favourite numbers and you wish to get one of them, and you tender for (lets say) three different numbers, and you get all three - are you obliged to take & pay for all three, or can you release the two you like less, and just pay some king of administration fee?
P.S. In addition to the very helpful information you have posted above, I just scanned through some of your other posts, and I would just like to say you appear a really nice guy. Wish there was a lot more in the world like you.
Thank you for sharing. Very much appreciated.
Raymond

January 14th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
Hi, really thanks for the info.
After reading your post, check kenderaan pendaftaran terkini is WTK 9000+… so i’m sure they will open the next alphabet (WTL) to choose from 3 digit onwards. Downloaded the form from jpj website, fill it up and list down what car number i want.
Since i had made a car booking, just leave my office from 3pm to Maju Junction JPJ (KL) to give it a try. To my surprise Maju Junction JPJ (KL) really empty… no annoying runners around. Get a number ticket, ‘SUPER FAST’ my turn already. Not even a chance to view the open number on the tv screen (WTL501 - 1999).
So just gave my IC and form to officer and choose from my list. Got my number and paid RM310. All procedures happen within 5 mins only. Gave it to my SA and now waiting for my baby to arrive…
Take note: You can’t choose double digits number (1122, 1331 etc). It’ only for tender.
January 16th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
i would ask same question as kelly. i’m interested in no 96 is the cost? to be tender price or hv fix price ?
