Have you ever wanted to use a real cool domain name. Instead of just using http://fendyrocks.blogspot.com/ you can actually use the http://www.fendyrocks.com/. Isn’t that just sounding much more awe-inspiring?

Fascinatingly, you also can configure the ‘looking good’ domain name forwarded to your existing blogging website and also back to your home PC simultaneously. When I say PC at home, that means you gotta have an internet connection ready too. Be it dial-up or ADSL, Maxis or Streamyx, wireless or wired. And, it does not really cost you a bomb. I can assure you, by at the end of the procedure, you’d only spent RM35 (less than USD$10) to make it happen.

This article is divided into two parts. In initial part, I will portray the steps of how to register a Domain Name with a local company. And the subsequent part will be the configuration of pointing the domain name back to home PC or to another existing website.

Please bear with me as this article will be fairly long.

Hot Lookin’ Domain Name

Think of the name
First, you need to think of a Domain Name that you’re going to buy. In my personal reference, whenever I’m buying a domain name, I always avoid hyphen or dash in the mix. E.g; fendy-rocks.com is no good but fendyrocks.com is better and far easier when describing it to a friend. We will take fendy.org as an example for this article.

Second, you need to check whether the domain name is available for acquisition. Simply go to this domain look-up provided by networksolutions.com and put in your domain in the search box and click search. Shortly, you will see ‘The following domains are available:’ followed by your entered Domain Name. That means, you may register the domain name. If you received other than I’ve described earlier, that means your preferred domain has been taken and you need to search for something else.

Let’s order online
Next, is to actually go and buy the domain of your choice. In my opinion, I’d choose to buy domain from a our local Malaysian company. You can also opt to US-based such as www.godaddy.com. However, here I’d recommend Shinjiru, a Web Hosting company that sells as cheap as foreign countries and located in Kuala Lumpur. If things tend to get messy, it’d be relatively straightforward to contact the local company for help or solution. Also, at this point of writing, Shinjiru’s .com domain name is priced at RM35 a year.

OK, go to www.shinjiru.com.my , click to ‘SIGN UP NOW’ and register as a Malaysian Customers. Once you are done with that, you may login into your account. After that, you will see icons with descriptions. Just click to the ‘CONTINUE’ at the ‘DOMAIN REGISTRATION’ row to register a new domain.

Next, you will see few form inputs need to be completed. Just proceed to ‘Step 2: Enter a Domain Name without the extension’ and put your domain name without .com or .org. Example can be observed at the picture alongside of this article. Then at the ‘Step 3: Select an extension’ just select from the drop down menu whether your domain is .com or any of the similar. Go to the next page by clicking to ‘continue’.

At this third page, you need to fill in your particulars. Please fill in the correct information of yourself. This is important because if there is any future unpredictable dispute in the ownership of your domain, this information might just save you at the end of the day. Just move on to the next page once that is done.

Alright, you have reach to the page where you need to select type of payment. First option, Payment Plan is quite simple; just choose ‘Yearly Plan’. Next is the Payment Method. Here you either can do wired transfer which mean bank transfer or Bank-in. I always use the Bank Transfer option because this is the fastest way to complete the transaction apart than credit card, of course. In my own security point of view, to choose between credit card and wired transfer, I certainly choose wired transfer. Normally, I’d log into my Maybank or Rhbbank Online Banking account and complete the Bank Transfer via it. But, do not pay just yet. I’ll describe it in a bit.

OK, the next page is the term and condition with the confirmation of the detail that you have entered. Just check the agreement box and click checkout. After all has confirmed, Shinjiru will automatically send you an email regarding the chosen payment method, price of the domain and their Bank Account number. You need this information to do banking transfer or money bank-in. Log into the online banking, do the transfer and print the transfer receipt. You can either fax the receipt to Shinjiru or just email to them. Remember to put the invoice number on the receipt. You can get the Invoice Number stated on the email sent by Shinjiru previously.

Shinjiru will soon send an email saying that they have received the payment and are undergoing completing the domain name registration. Usually it takes no longer than 24 hours before your domain name is fully registered. After that, Shinjiru will send you another email on how to get to the Domain Control Panel System. Along with that email you will receive username and password together with a website link to modify your domain name properties.

That’s it! You have successfully completed the Domain Name purchasing. Remember, if you encountered any problem regarding these steps, just leave a comment here stating your difficulty so that I may be able to check and clarify it for you.

Stay tuned for the second part of this article: Configuring the domain to your PC and existing website.
